With northern states recording record high temperatures this spring following a mild winter, pests are starting to appear earlier than normal. For residents in Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana, the odd weather pattern has resulted in a low winter kill for some pests, which could lead to larger home infestations during the spring months. With the feeding, mating, and colonizing happening earlier this year, Rose Pest Solutions’ would like to offer some tips to help you plan for a pest-free season.
The types of insects that are appearing early this season include:
Mosquitoes. These pests can quickly become a problem if there is standing water on a property. Female mosquitoes lay their eggs on or near standing water, which includes clogged gutters, drainage ditches, birdbaths, and tree cavities.
Earwigs. These small insects are characterized by having smooth elongated bodies that have pairs of horny forceps, and earwigs will start to migrate indoors as temperatures get warmer. This migration could lead to large infestations in cool, damp areas like basements, bathrooms, or kitchens.
Stinging Insects. These include wasps, yellow jackets, and hornets and these pests are opportunistic builders that may build a nest on or near your property. While most wasps will not sting a human unless they feel threatened, Yellow Jackets pose a considerable threat to humans as they may sting repeatedly and can cause allergic reactions.
Ground Nesting Ants. These ants will usually be established outside in underground nests with numbers of ants in the colony ranging from a few dozen to many tens of thousands. Ants will find many different ways to get into your home, coming through gaps in door frames, eaves, window frames, utility lines, and plumbing.
