Keep Dry This Season to Ensure a Mosquito Free Summer

Thursday, May 18, 2023

As the weather warms up and spring changes to summer, many eagerly anticipate spending time outdoors. However, the return of mosquitoes can put a damper on any outside activity - but Rose Pest Solutions, the nation's oldest pest management company, is here to help homeowners avoid these pesky bloodsuckers at all costs.

While many see the appearance of these seasonal insects as an absolute, the abundance of mosquitoes in an area hinge on a few environmental factors, including the prevalence of standing water.

“Standing water, or water left undisturbed for a couple of weeks or longer, is actually a major factor that many overlook when it comes to mosquito populations and trends,” said Mark VanderWerp, manager of education and training for Rose Pest Solutions. “When left undisturbed, even the smallest amount of water can become a haven for mosquito larvae – pushing population numbers far beyond the normal number we would see during a dryer summer.”

Clogged drains, gutters, and other areas of undisturbed water are prime breeding grounds for mosquitos and they’re able to breed in as little water as it takes to fill the cap of a plastic water bottle. A single female mosquito can also lay between 50-500 eggs, and it only takes a few days for them to hatch into larvae.

On top of the unpleasant bites brought about by mosquitos, the insects can also spread multiple diseases like West Nile virus and several encephalitides – rare conditions in which the tissues in the brain become inflamed - such as Eastern Equine Encephalitis.

To prevent a swarm of mosquitos from ruining time spent outdoors and spreading diseases, homeowners should always ensure their property is free from potential debris that can hold water and that standing water is cleared every few days. Areas requiring attention include emptying or refreshing water in birdbaths, flowerpot saucers, buckets, and other outdoor objects that collect water while regularly ensuring the drainage and grading for their property are properly assessed to minimize mosquito habitats.

If mosquitoes become too prevalent, it’s best to turn to a licensed pest management company like Rose Pest Solutions for safe and effective treatment. Technicians deployed by Rose can quickly identify areas where mosquitos are likely to breed and are educated on how to properly treat an area without targeting pollinators and other wildlife while also minimizing contact with flowering plants and gardens.
