Box Elder Bugs

Box Elder Bugs

What is a box elder bug?

Box elder bugs are small, black insects with distinctive red markings and flat wings that lay across their backs. An adult box elder bug is about ½ inch long and feeds on Ash trees, Maple trees, Cherry trees as well as their namesake, the Box Elder tree.

Why do I have them?

Box Elder Bugs in a Columbus Ohio yardBox elder bugs tend to invade homes and buildings starting in the late summer in search of a warm place to overwinter. They are likely to be a nuisance when the weather grows colder and they take shelter in the cracks and crevices until the warmer weather returns.

Are they dangerous?

While they are often considered a nuisance pest, box elder bugs do not pose a serious risk to your home or health.

How do you get rid of box elder bugs?

Because of their ability to take shelter well inside a structure, box elder bugs are difficult to get rid of. Contacting Rose Pest Solutions at the first sign of a box elder bug infestation is the best way to eliminate box elder bugs effectively. Visit our residential pest control page to learn more about treatment options.

Can I do it myself?

Due to the complicated treatment process and the amount of time required to perform these treatments, box elder bugs are typically not a pest many homeowners have much success eradicating. Many do-it-yourself remedies simply do not work as the chemicals they use are not effective. Remember – if misused or mixed improperly, pesticides can be very dangerous to people and pets.
