If you have been tuning into the news recently you may have heard that the West Nile Virus is spreading rapidly across the country. West Nile Virus is transmitted via the bite of a mosquito and while this is certainly not the first year that mosquitoes are swarming around and piercing the skin of humans, this year has proven to be one of the worst for the spread of West Nile. So what gives? There are many reasons that could attribute to the outbreak but weather seems to be the common theme among the theories of pest control professionals.
Michigan has been experiencing a dry summer which has forced mosquitoes to congregate in high concentrations around the few moist areas thus making it easier for the virus to spread. In order to help avoid getting infected by the West Nile Virus which currently there is no human vaccination for, here are some helpful tips:
-
Remove any source of stagnant water from your property.
-
Keep pools and hot tubs covered while they are not being used.
-
Clean out drain gutters and ditches so they do not build up with water and debris.
-
Wear insect repellent and protective clothing when in areas known to have mosquitoes.
-
Avoid going outside during peak mosquito activity (dawn and dusk).
