Sudden Appearance Of Cockroaches?

Sunday, February 5, 2017

Having just put the finishing touches in place, going through a final cleanliness inspection, you step back and give a satisfied look at the squeaky clean, well-decorated home. You are now ready for your party guests. And then suddenly, your moment of satisfaction comes crashing down to an abrupt end! What was that I just saw scurrying across my countertop? Was that a cockroach? What will my guests think if they see one in my house? How can I identify cockroaches? Does this mean that I have a cockroach infestation in my home?

It has been said that if you see one cockroach in your home, there are many more you don’t see. While this is normally correct, it isn’t always the case. It could be that this single cockroach came home with you today from the grocery store. The disgusting pest may have been hiding in the folds of the paper bag that carried your groceries. Or it could have been inside a bag of potatoes. It could have even come into your house in a friend’s purse. There are an endless number of ways a cockroach can suddenly appear in your home. Now comes the arduous task of identifying the cockroach and how to look for signs of a possible cockroach infestation.

Cockroaches will hide in a multiplicity of locations within the home where they can find food and water; pantries, cupboards, under sinks in the kitchen or bathroom, and any dark locations or cracks in which they can hide.

the most common cockroach in michigan and ohio, the german cockroach

The most common cockroach found in Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana is the German cockroach followed by the American cockroach and occasionally the Oriental cockroach. To find out which species you might have in your house go to our Cockroach Pest ID page.

How to Identify A Cockroach Infestation

  • Begin a thorough inspection of areas in the home where cockroaches have access to food, water, and shelter
  • Looking for tiny flecks of cockroach droppings
  • Look for very small, empty eggshell skins or eggs that have not hatched out
  • Suddenly flip on a light or slam a cabinet door to catch adult cockroaches in action

Any of these signs are an indication that you have an infestation of cockroaches.
