Is your property a breeding ground for mosquitoes? Obviously, this isn’t something you would plan for or even allow to go on if you knew it was happening but believe it or not, if you have ANY standing water on your property, mosquitoes are probably breeding there.
Allowing mosquitoes to breed on your property is a very bad idea. Not only can mosquitoes make time spent outdoors miserable, but they are known for spreading serious diseases, including Zika, West Nile virus, Malaria, Yellow fever, Dengue fever and several types of Encephalitis. In the Caribbean and the southern US, mosquitoes are known for spreading the Zika Virus. These thin-bodied flies are also capable of delivering painful and itchy bites that can have you running indoors. So what can you do to limit mosquito breeding grounds on your property? Here are the areas you should pay close attention to when eliminating potential breeding grounds.
Check garbage cans, house gutters, buckets, pool covers, toys, coolers, flower pots and any other containers where rain water has collected. Empty these receptacles so that mosquitoes don’t have the opportunity to breed in the standing water.
Remove debris from your property that may collect water. Discard old tires, drums, bottles, cans, pots and pans, broken appliances and anything else on your property that could serve to a mosquito's benefit.
If you have pet water bowls that are out in the open all the time we suggest emptying its water a couple of times a week.
If you have a bird bath, replace it weekly.
Cover boats and other vehicles with a tarp so that they don’t accumulate water.
If you have a swimming pool, make sure it stays in good condition and is appropriately chlorinated. If you have plastic kiddy pools, empty them when they are not in use.
Paying close attention to possible breeding zones on your property can help limit how many mosquitoes you come into contact with on your property. Unfortunately, mosquitoes are a reality that we all deal with, even when you limit mosquito breeding zones around your home. To limit your contact with these pests, we recommend covering your skin when spending time outdoors and always using insect repellent. Preventing the spread of mosquitoes is much more effective than trying to manage them.
