What is an Ant?

Ants are social insects of the family Formicidae that live in large colonies, usually underground. Currently, more than 12,000 species of ant are classified with upper estimates of about 14,000 species. They are easily identified by their elbowed antennae and a distinctive body structure that creates a narrow waist. What makes ants so successful is the fact that they live for and work towards a common goal, which is that of caring for at least one queen and the other ants in the colony. This shared purpose makes them a particularly tenacious pest that has great success foraging to feed the queen and the young.

Why do I have them?

An ant colony will usually be established outside in an underground nest with numbers of ants in the colony ranging from a few dozen to many tens of thousands. Ants prefer to live outside and the usual reason for finding them indoors is because they are foraging for food – hundreds of feet from the nest in some cases. Ants can be very resolute pests and will find many different ways to get into your home – coming in through gaps in door frames, eaves, window frames, utility lines and plumbing.

Are they dangerous?

Generally no. The primary concern for most ants is always their ability to cause a nuisance or damage in some cases, but even though they can contaminate food sources they are not known for carrying diseases.

How do you get rid of ants?

Ants may be difficult to eradicate because they can have many nests that are all interlinked. In the treatment process, if one of the nests in the network is missed then it is possible for the ants to recover and rebuild. Can I do it myself?

Due to the complexities of the treatment process and the time needed to treat infestations, many homeowners are not typically successful in eradicating ants. Remember – if mixed improperly or misused, pesticides can be dangerous to people and pets.
