House Mouse

Mice are extremely harmful pests, spreading diseases through their parasites, urine and feces and consuming and contaminating food meant for humans, livestock and other animals.

What kind of Mice do I have?

There are two common types of mouse species that will enter your home or your business. The house mouse is a small rodent that is nearly hairless and has a slightly pointed black nose with slightly protruding eyes and large ears. They range in color from very light brown to black and normally have a gray belly or buff belly.  The droppings are black and have a musty smell.  Another common rodent invader is the deer mouse.  The deer mouse is bi-colored, having white feet, usually a white belly and white undersides with a brownish upper back and head. Their tails are quite long, oftentimes the same length as the head and body combined.  Their tails are very distinctively multi-colored, and compared to the house mouse, the deer mouse has larger eyes and ears.  The droppings of the deer mouse are black and smooth with pointed ends. 

Why do I have them?

Mice are commensal, meaning that they share space and habitats with humans and depend on us in part for their survival.  Mice are always looking for food, water and shelter for survival, and have been known to enter dwellings through very small holes, sometimes holes smaller than 1/4" in diameter.  Rodents have the capability of entering a structure through tiny and unpredictable places and since most structures are not sealed appropriately, rodents often have no trouble finding their way inside. 

Are they dangerous?

Yes. The deer mouse transmits salmonellosis, swine dysentery and the potentially fatal Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) through its urine and feces. HPS disease does not affect other mice but can be very dangerous to humans and can be transmitted through disturbance or immediate contact with mouse carcasses, or by breathing in aerosolized urine droplets of infected deer mice. Besides HPS, the micro droplets of mouse urine can cause allergies in children and the presence of mice can cause other pests to enter your home, as they often carry fleas, ticks and mites.
