Bed Bugs

Bed Bugs

What is a bed bug?

Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are ectoparasites that strictly feed on blood. Bed bugs are aptly named because they normally hide in mattresses, or as close as possible to their human host to enable easy nighttime feeding. They are very small insects about 3/16 inch in length, flat and broadly oval.

Why do I have them?

They are excellent hitchhikers and are usually unknowingly transported in or on luggage, clothing, or other belongings that are carried by people as they travel. Current outbreaks have been traced to increased domestic and international travel. This is a particular problem for hotels, motels, and apartments, where the turnover of occupants is always constant. Bed bug infestations can also occur inadvertently by bringing bed bug-infested furniture, mattresses, or used clothing to one's household. Bed bugs may also travel between units in multi-unit buildings after being brought into the building by one of the aforementioned routes. Bed bugs may wander between adjoining apartments through voids in walls and holes for wires and pipes.

Are they dangerous?

Although bed bugs can dine on any warm-blooded animal, they primarily dine on humans. They are not known to transmit diseases, but bed bug bites can become red, itchy welts due to transfer of saliva when feeding.

How do you get rid of bed bugs?

Because of their elusive nature, bed bugs are easily overlooked by unsuspecting property owners and managers.  Our Bed Bug Canine Inspections allow for quicker, more accurate detection of bed bugs and, because they are extremely difficult to eradicate, our bed bug services include the necessary products and follow up visits for one fee. Our treatment methods consist of the following:

Manual Services:

  • The most cost-effective choice for: Immediate treatment of select areas within a structure or home.

  • Resident preparation:  Requires extensive preparation by the resident.

  • Chemical applications: This process can be accomplished with or without chemicals.

Heat Treatment Services:

  • The most cost-effective choice for: Resolving heavy infestations in cluttered conditions. Heat has been proven to kill all stages of the bed bug, from egg to adult, usually in just one visit.

  • Resident preparation: Less extensive preparation required for the resident and they can return to their home that same day.

  • Chemical applications: The primary method of treatment is chemical-free heat.  We may include the use of a natural-chemical treatment called Diatomaceous Earth, which is a naturally occurring dust that kills bed bugs and other nuisance pests physically, not chemically.

Fumigation Services:

  • The most cost-effective choice for: The treatment of heavy infestations in large structures.

  • Resident preparation:  Less extensive preparation required for the resident.  Residents must vacate the structure for 24-48 hours without re-entering.

  • Chemical applications:  Sulfuryl Fluoride (Vikane®)

Can I do it myself?

Due to the complexity of treatment and the time required, bed bugs are generally not a pest many people have success in eradicating. Beware when purchasing pesticides and other products online as many are not effective. Pesticides can be harmful to people and pets if they are misused or mixed improperly. Please contact us today if you have a potential bed bug infestation in Cleveland, Detroit, Cincinnati, or elsewhere in our service area.

Is the treatment safe?

Rose uses only enough material to resolve the problem.  We integrate natural bed bug products and mechanical means into our protocols as much as possible. When conventional materials are required, we follow very stringent guidelines for the use of the product to minimize the threat to people, pets or plants. All products are registered by the EPA. Our service technicians will inform you of any specific safety measures that need to be taken.
