Experts contribute changes in pest control practices and insecticide resistance as part of the reason. Bob Seske at Rose Pest Solutions in Niles says during the past three years, the number of bed bug cases they've handled has more than doubled every year. He says while they can be annoying and hard to get rid of, currently they don't pose much of a health risk.
“It’s a personal pest. It attacks you when you’re sleeping. Makes you feel vulnerable. But they haven’t been known to transmit disease,” said Seske. “So realistically, a mosquito is still more important, but it[s tough to get a good night’s sleep when you know you have them.”
The experts at Rose Pest Solutions tell us it’s not always the case of a dirty bed or home that leads to a bed bug infestation. You can clean as much as you want, but the resilient and stubborn bug will still find any crevice to hide in.
“You could wash your sheets twice a day and that probably won’t have an effect,” said Seske.
Professionals use many methods for finding and eliminating bed bugs. Dogs are now used to sniff out infestations. Then chemical, vacuuming or heat treatments are used. Heat treatment involves raising the room temperature to more than 120 degrees which drives the bugs out. Seske feels this is the quickest method.
“One treatment and you’re done, where a chemical treatment can take a couple of trips,” said Seske.
But that treatment can cost $1,200. Meaning, you’ll have to decide what is more likely to keep you up at night: The cost or the bugs.
Bed bugs can live for weeks, or even months without feeding. Currently there are no effective repellents for the insect. Experts advise if you find the bugs in your home, call a professional.

Bedbugs -- they're hardly what you'd call picky.
"As long as you have warm blood, they'll take it," said Mark Sheperdigian, a member of the Michigan Bed Bug Working Group, a group of public health officials, housing and tourism officials and pest-control experts.
