Bed Bug Management and Prevention

Good Night, Sleep Tight, Don't let the Bed bugs bite!

Would you know a bed bug if you saw one?  Bed bugs are making a come back and they're spreading across the country thanks in part to increased international travel.

Bed bugs are small, brown, fat, oval-shaped insects that are less than 1/4" long.  They feed on the blood of humans, small animals or birds and may live for over a year without a blood meal.  They do not fly or hop, but are fast-moving.  They usually come out at night to feed and then they hide during the day, typically near the side seams of the mattress.  Bed bugs lay many tiny white eggs that hatch into more young bed bugs very quickly.

SIGNS OF BED BUGS

Besides actually seeing live or crushed bed bugs, a common sign is the presence of reddish blood and tiny dark fecal spots on bedding and furniture.  Shed skins of the young bed bugs can usually be found where bed bugs hide during the day.  Again, it is important to get a positive identification.

When Traveling, Don't Let the Bed Bugs Bite - Tips for Preventing an Encounter with Bed Bugs

  • Treat the outside of your luggage with appropriately labeled insect repellent to deter bed bugs from hitching a ride home with you.
  • Avoid bringing personal items like pillows, blankets, etc. to the hotel or lodging.
  • Bring a small, bright flashlight to inspect dark places.
  • Place your luggage on a luggage rack (after you have inspected it), or against the far wall, away from the bed and nightstands, not on the bed.
  • Remove the headboard, if you can, and carefully look for bed bugs, reddish blood spots or tiny dark fecal spots from bed bugs.
  • Look inside and underneath drawers in bedside tables for bed bug signs, especially before placing items into or on them.
If you find signs of bed bugs, or think you have found bed bugs, collect them and present them to hotel management for identification.  There are other insects that look like bed bugs, but are not as great a problem.  If your room DOES have a problem, have hotel management move you to another room.  Make sure the new room is NOT immediately adjacent to the infested room that you are departing.

AFTER TRAVEL

  • If bed bugs are suspected of being present in your luggage, do not bring it into your bedroom at home.  Unpack on a table or surface where bud bugs can be easily seen.
  • Wash all suspect clothing in the warmest temperature that is safe according to clothing washing directions.
BED BUG BITES

Most people have no reaction to bed bug bites and require no treatment.  If itching, redness, rashes or other symptoms persist, see your family physician.

A FINAL THOUGHT

Despite the increasing incidence of bed bugs, the odds of encountering these insects are small.  Don't stop traveling and enjoying life.  Just travel smart.

LOOKING FOR AN EXPERT?

Businesses at risk for bed bug infestations (such as hotels, summer camps, university student housing facilities, movie theaters, etc.) may be interested in training sessions to help their staff learn to recognize the signs of an infestation.  It's much less painful to have a preventative program in place  than to have to react afterwards to a bad surprise.  The Rose technical department is at your service with five entomologists on staff, and three of them are Board Certified Entomologists.
