As a longtime pest control company serving Cincinnati, Dayton, Columbus and many other locations throughout Ohio, Rose Pest Solutions understands that the Eastern Subterranean Termite is one of the most economically devastating pests to invade homes in this region. It is estimated that termites cause nearly 5 billion dollars in damages each year in the United States alone; that is more than the damage caused by fires, tornadoes, hurricanes and earthquakes combined. While treating termites is best left to the professionals, here are a few tips to help you identify this nuisance pest and the damages caused by them.
Termite Basics
Eastern subterranean termites are social insects that live below the ground in colonies. They require moisture from the soil to survive, if they get dried out, they die. These termites are small, soft bodied insects, no longer than 1/16th to ½ inch in length and because they are so small, their activity can be very hard to identify until it is too late and structural timbers have been severely damaged. Subterranean termites are eating machines. The workers forage underground, up to 350 feet away from the colony, in their round the clock search for food. They feed primarily on dead wood, but will also devour and destroy materials that contain cellulose including books, siding, door and window frames, drywall, fences and other wood by-products.
The Signs to Look For
Being one of the most vulnerable areas for termite activity, no Ohio home is safe from the damages caused by these devastating insects. Unfortunately, you may have no idea that a termite colony is nearby, but there are a few things to watch out for that may indicate they are lurking about.
-
Small mud tunnels leading to and on your foundation
-
Crumbling drywall or plaster
-
Warped doors
-
Sagging floors
-
Swarming termites in the early spring, usually following a rain storm
-
Dead termites or wings on window sills or along walls
