The anticipation for summer has had many of us thinking ahead to backyard barbecues with friends, lounging by the pool with a good book and even about gardening and lawn work. Unfortunately summer time coincides with the arrival of many annoying pests, including stinging insects. As a longtime pest control company serving all of Michigan and Ohio including Toledo and Cincinnati, we realize that potential for painful, and sometimes dangerous, stings increases as families and pets seek out the sun and try to enjoy the warm weather while it lasts. With that in mind we’ve compiled some tips on how to avoid encounters with yellow jackets, wasps, hornets and other stinging insects.
-
If you are hosting a barbeque, be sure to store food inside until it’s ready to be served and after the eating, make sure to clean up immediately
-
Keep trash in containers with tightly-fitting lids at least 20 feet away from people
-
Don’t wear brightly colored or floral printed clothing that may be mistaken for real flowers to stinging insects
-
Do not wear sweet-smelling perfumes, shampoos and conditioners; they smell like flowers to yellow jackets and wasps
-
Cover up whenever possible this includes shoes, long sleeves and pants
-
If a yellow jacket, hornet or wasp drops by your event, do not swat or try to kill it; it may become aggravated and attack
-
If you discover a nest on your property, DO NOT try and remove it on your own; contact the professionals
