Are you safe from the invading pests they may try to get into your home this winter? We’re talking about house micelady bugs, spiders, and stink bugs. All of these pests are looking for a nice, warm and comfortable place to spend their winter and your home is an excellent choice, providing everything these pests need to happily survive during the winter months.

It’s important to remain vigilant against these pests during the fall months, to be sure that they can’t get into your home to spend the winter. A few preventative maintenance measures can help keep these pests from arriving on your doorstep, and they include:

  • Close up any cracks or gaps in your foundation so that pests can’t get in. Seal tiny openings around utility pipes with caulk and install fine wire mesh behind dryer vents and anywhere else there may be an opening in your home’s façade.

  • Check for gaps around windows and doors and seal these areas with caulk or have a handyman come in and repair these issues.

  • Keep food in your pantry protected from pests by putting it in hard plastic containers that have tight fitting lids. Clean up food spills quickly and thoroughly; if pests have nothing to feed on in your home, it is a much less hospitable place for them to spend the winter.

  • Eliminate open food sources, like the fruit bowl in the kitchen. Keep produce like bananas, tomatoes and cantaloupe in the refrigerator; this will keep them safe from vinegar flies (fruit flies) and other pests, like rodents, that may be looking for a snack.

  • Store firewood and other outdoor necessities away from the home and at least five inches off the ground, so that pests don’t choose to take up residence here. If they attach themselves to your firewood or any other outdoor items that you then bring inside the house, they are gaining free entry into your home.

  • Keep an eye on your plumbing systems during the winter. Cracked and dripping pipes are very attractive to lots of different pests and areas with a lot of moisture can make for nice homes for pests like earwigs.
