One of the most invasive species of ants to be foraging in Detroit, Cleveland and Columbus as well as many homes throughout the region is the carpenter ant. These wood destroying insects can carve their way through the sound wood structures of your home leaving you with extensive damages. It is important to learn what to look out for so that you can identify and prevent carpenter ants from wreaking havoc in your home.
If you have a carpenter ant colony on your property there are a few ways in which you can identify these pests:
Large, black ants foraging through your home or on your property
Small piles of saw dust called “frass” left outside of their nests
Structural damages to wood on your property or inside of your home
Keep in mind that the colonies generally contain extensions of nests that can make carpenter ants very difficult to treat for. If all of the nests are not treated, the colony will be able to quickly grow and spread once again. This means that if you do spot any signs of carpenter ants it is important to call in the pest control professionals.
In order to prevent any ant infestations from causing you a major headache, here are some tips to help keep your home and property ant free:
-
Seal off all exterior points of entry including small cracks, crevices, and holes on the exterior.
-
Make sure that any open windows are sealed with screens that contain no holes or tears.
-
Clean up crumbs, spills, and other food debris so that you do not attract ants into the kitchen.
-
Store all open food in containers with tight fitting lids to keep ants out.
-
Remove wood debris from the yard including sticks, twigs, or any decaying wood.
