Perhaps you have already spotted a few ants in the kitchen and thought that they were no big deal. What many homeowners in our region fail to recognize is that ants, and in particular carpenter ants, are capable of causing major problems when found in and around homes. Although many species of ants are considered more of a nuisance than a threat to health and property, carpenter ants are capable of structural damages that could leave you and your wallet feeling ill.
Though carpenter ants prefer to create their colonies outside, there are often ants spotted indoors because they are either foraging for food or they have developed a satellite colony somewhere in your home. Carpenter ants are generally found inhabiting decaying wood, but this does not mean they will stop there. As the spring season brings more moisture to the soil, any sticks, limbs or other pieces of wood lying around your property are a major magnet to carpenter ants. Once a large colony has been established, there is nothing stopping them from moving inside to more sound wood structures.
Carpenter ants do not eat wood like termites, but they will still destroy it by carving galleries. So, what is a worried homeowner to do to stop carpenter ants from infesting their homes? Rose Pest Solutions has a few tips for homeowners to help prevent carpenter ants:
-
Keep food stored in containers with tight fitting lids.
-
Consistently wipe food surfaces down to avoid crumbs and spills.
-
Take trash out regularly and store it in bins with lids.
-
Remove sticks and other wood debris from lawn that will decay with the moist spring weather.
Hopefully you do not have worry about the fuss of a carpenter ant infestation this spring. But if they do happen to sneak onto your property and into your home, contact the pest professionals at Rose Pest Solutions right away before the carpenter ants cause any structural damages. If you live in Cincinnati, Columbus, or Cleveland, Ohio or elsewhere in Rose’s service area, you will surely be protected from the ants marching in with the Rose Home Service Program.
